Development Office
“Our mission in the development function of LIT is to actively engage with organisations who need our support and with those who care about LIT, our community, the city and region where we reside and to provide these organisations with opportunities to enhance our active learning, teaching, research, enterprise
and engagement programmes.”

Our collaborative approach can be seen in the Institutional co-operation that already exists between LIT and partner colleges. It can also be seen in the joint actions of Limerick City and County Councils, the Higher Education organisations in the area including LIT and other development organisations to promote an integrated approach to investment in the city’s future.

Collaboration also lies at the heart of LIT’s enterprise development activity and its unique Enterprise Ladder, through which our Enterprise Development and Business Liaison Manager Gillian Barry works closely with Enterprise Ireland, the IDA, City and County Enterprise Boards, the Chambers of Commerce and our own Academic business specialists to facilitate the establishment and development of enterprises within the region.

Our research activity which is managed by our Head of Research and Technology Transfer Dr. Siobhan Moane and our development projects which are managed by Ciaran Lynch our Development Manager, generate substantial investment from abroad and involve many international and Irish partners as well as close cooperation with the Academic staff of LIT.

Finally, the LIT Thought Leadership Group and Friends of LIT are manged by Mr. Kieran MacSweeney. This group assists our team in developing a long term, strategic and objective view and in developing relationships and networks to assist in fundraising and income diversification so that LIT can play a key role in revitalising Limerick and the region.

Research & Development Strategy

Engaging in research is vital for LIT, both in terms of staff development and curriculum development. Research helps us to remain at the forefront of the disciplines we offer and to maintain links with industry, it informs our teaching, and it signifies the final step up the ladder of opportunity for our students. However, we need to establish a clear focus for our research activity. Financial constraints, as well as a clear division of roles vis à vis the universities, mean that taught master’s degree programmes or research leading to qualification levels 9 and 10 should be of a strategic and selective nature, in targeted areas reflecting national or regional priorities. Criteria for determining these areas are the opportunities for cooperation across academic departments, relevance for regional industry and the community, differentiation from other third-level providers or indeed cooperation with them, and benefits to existing undergraduate programmes. Niches have been identified in Biotechnology or Consumer Foods, Renewable Energy Control Systems, new technologies in Construction, internationally traded services (Business), and studio-based work in Art and Design. The Institute opened an Incubation Centre (LITMUS) in 2006, as part of a drive by Enterprise Ireland to offer space and assistance to entrepreneurs who want to develop their businesses within the supportive structure of a college campus. These entrepreneurs might be graduates of LIT, or local high-potential start-ups. LITMUS has embraced the goals set by Enterprise Ireland to increase the rate of new indigenous business formation and survival. In addition, we will endeavour to develop significant spin-out companies through commercialisation of research.

Strategic Goal 5

LIT aims to further develop and nurture research capacity in niche areas, selected for being innovative and relevant. External funding will be sought to enhance and expand research opportunities for staff and students.

5.1 LIT will achieve Delegation of Authority for Level 9 Awards and Research (2005) and for Level 10 Awards and Research (2007) in subject areas where there is evidence of sustainable demand and existing staff expertise.

5.2 We will offer key and integrated support in Research and Development leading to business creation, growth, technological development and innovation in the Mid- West region.
