Insight Centre for Data Analytics is the largest of the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) research centres. With over 300 researchers, 40 partners in industry and in excess of €88 million of funding, Insight is one of the biggest centres for data analytics in Europe. We live in a data rich world, where almost everything we do results in a data record being created and stored somewhere. Our vision is to create a healthier, safer, more productive world by empowering a data-driven society to enable better decisions by individuals, communities, business and governments. The Insight Centre for Data Analytics was created to realise this vision. At Insight we combine the skills of leading researchers with cutting-edge technologies from diverse research areas. We work closely with industry partners to develop next-generation data acquisition and analytics solutions for important and diverse application areas.

Insight has a critical mass of research competence and is an international beacon for the science and application of Big Data Analytics. The Insight Centre is designed to provide a national ICT research platform for Ireland based on world-class targeted research programmes. The centre opened on July 1st 2013 and has received funding in excess of €88m, from SFI and Industry sources, for research programmes spanning the next six years.

Insight & Industry
Working with companies and other organisations is a key part of our work at Insight. It is critical that the challenges faced by industry inform our research direction and that the outputs of that research have an impact in the broader economy. In this regard, we already work with many different types and size of organisation from 1-2 person startup companies to multi-national corporations and governments.

There are many different ways that your organisation can work with us. In order to help you understand if Insight may be relevant to you, here is a description of the high-level areas that our work falls under:

Research

As Ireland’s national centre for Data Analytics, our research areas revolve around this broad topic.
-Integration of multiple, hetergenous data sources

-Use data – both public & private – to drive better recommendations and support decision-making
-Make better decisions & finding optimal solutions to complex decision problems
-Visualise your data in novel ways to make sense of patterns, trends, etc
-Leverage the wealth of data sources on the web, including social media, government data & more to gain Insights, understand markets, etc.

Starting Point
The starting point in most cases is simply to get in touch. From there, we can have a conversation where we will provide more information on the centre overall and specific areas that may be of interest. From your side, we would like to understand what your needs are so that we can try to identify where there might be some common ground. If/when we do find this common ground, there are (very broadly) 2 types of relationship.

A – Driven by Research Problem/Area
In this type of collaboration, the non-academic organisation would like to get involved in a collaboration aimed at researching into a specific area of interest to them. This area may be relevant/important because of the commercial potential it might offer but this form of collaboration differs from the one below in that there is not a specific commercial outcome in mind.

B – Driven by Specific Commercial Need
The second broad type of collaboration is where there is a specific commercial objective in mind at the outset. With this kind of project, the deliverables are focussed from the outset on that commercial outcome.

Both of these types of relationship break down into a number of further options/models to collaborate. For example, they can both be bi-lateral or involve a consortium of academic and non-academic partners. It all depends on the specific objectives of the project and the framework/guidelines in place from the funding source (where applicable). So get in touch if you'd like to know more!

Insight & Academia
Insight loves to collaborate! And there are many opportunities available to academics and researchers who wish to collaborate directly with Insight investigators at all levels, from summer internships and visiting researchers (e.g. Fulbright) to large-scale, international project-based collaborations such as EU FP7 programmes or joint NSF-SFI initiatives. If you have a specific collaboration opportunity in mind and know the research or research group within Insight that you believe provides the best fit then please contact them directly. If you have a more general question about our collaboration programmes then please contact us.
