The problem of efficient plant-disease protection is closely related to the problems of sustainable agriculture and climate change. Research results indicate that climate change can alter stages and rates of development of the pathogen, modify host resistance, and result in changes in the physiology of host-pathogen interactions. The situation is further complicated by the fact that, today, diseases are transferred globally easier than ever before. New diseases can occur in places in which they were not present before and where the local expertise to combat them does not exist and ill-informed application of pesticides causes the development of long-term resistance of the pathogens, severely reducing our ability to fight back. Timely and accurate diagnosis of plant diseases is one of the pillars of precision agriculture and is crucial for preventing unnecessary waste of financial and other resources, achieving healthier production, addressing the problem of the development of long term resistance of the pathogen and mitigating the negative effects of climate change. An application for smart mobile devices that could detect diseases in fruits, vegetables and other crops based on the photo of a leaf, and suggest correct treatment, would serve as an aid to farmers for fast disease detection and speed up the decision-making process related to plant protection. At the same time it can be used to collect information about the location of the disease, creating a robust, grassroots technology system to aid in the fight for sustainable agriculture.
