PRECISION AND SUSTAINABLE FARMING FOR AN EFFICIENT USE OF EXTERNAL INPUTS IN THE EUROPEAN INTENSIVE CROPPING SYSTEMS

THE MAIN GOAL OF THE PRESENT PROPOSAL IS TO PROMOTE THE CEBAS-CSIC PARTICIPATION IN THE CALL H2020-SFS-2014-2. A: EXTERNAL NUTRIENTS. THE PROPOSED ACTIVITIES WITHIN THIS GRANT APPLICATION WILL SUPPORT THE COORDINATION BETWEEN THE PROJECT LEADER AND REST OF PARTNERS IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE POSSIBILITY TO OBTAIN THE GRANT. THE PROJECT TO BE SUBMITTED TO THE H2020 CALL TITLED �PRECISION AND SUSTAINABLE FARMING FOR A MORE EFFICIENT USE OF EXTERNAL INPUTS IN THE EUROPEAN INTENSIVE AGRICULTURE (PRECIFARM)� IS IN LINE WITH THE SOCIETAL CHALLENGE 2 �SEGURIDAD Y CALIDAD ALIMENTARIAS; ACTIVIDAD AGRARIA PRODUCTIVA Y SOSTENIBLE, RECURSOS NATURALES, INVESTIGACION MARINA Y MARITIMA� ESTABLISHED BY THE SPANISH R&D PROGRAMS. PRECIFARM GENERAL OBJECTIVE IS INCREASING THE WATER AND NUTRIENTS USE EFFICIENCY IN THE INTENSIVE EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE SYSTEMS. THIS GENERAL GOAL WILL BE ACHIEVED BY MEANS OF PRECISION AGRICULTURE PRACTICES AIMED AT APPLYING INPUTS MATCHING THE REAL PLANT NEEDS AND CONSIDERING THE ON-FARM SPATIAL VARIABILITY USING VARIABLE APPLICATION TECHNOLOGIES. THE USE ON NON-CONVENTIONAL WATER RESOURCES WILL BE AN INNOVATIVE PART OF THE PROPOSAL, SINCE THE USE OF TREATED WASTE WATER WILL BE CONSIDERED AS A NATURAL SOURCE OF NUTRIENTS. NOVEL WATER DEPURATION TECHNOLOGIES WILL BE DEVELOPED AND TESTED IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN WATER NUTRIENT LOADS BUT ELIMINATING THE RISKS FOR HUMAN HEALTH. EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE HARVEST QUALITY COMPONENT. BY MEANS OF REGULATED DEFICIT IRRIGATION AND FERTILIZATION PRACTICES, FRUIT AND VEGETABLE COMPOSITION WILL BE IMPROVED. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE PROJECT HAS A GENERAL GOAL TO DESIGN INNOVATIVE SOIL MANAGEMENT AND FERTILIZATION PRACTICES AIMED AT INCREASING NUTRIENT USE EFFICIENCY BY ADDING BIOSTIMULANTS AND ROOT COLONIZERS BOOSTING GROWTH, WATER AND NUTRIENT ABSORPTION, AS WELL AS PLANT VIGOR. MORE SUSTAINABLE ORCHARD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES WILL BE ALSO DEVELOPED BY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE INTERNAL ORCHARD RESOURCES SUCH AS PRUNING WASTE AND COVER CROP. INDEED, MORE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES WILL BE DESIGNED IN ORDER TO ADAPT IRRIGATION AND FERTILIZATION PRACTICES TO THE GENETIC MATERIAL EMPLOYED CONSIDERING THE ALREADY EXISTING POOL OF NUTRIENTS IN THE WATER AND IN THE SOILS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES AND THE FINAL OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT WILL BE A DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM ABLE TO PROVIDE USERS WITH ON-LINE GENERAL RECOMMENDATION FOR A MORE EFFICIENT USE OF WATER AND NUTRIENTS IN THE INTENSIVE HORTICULTURE.
