Description:

The main subject of the Institute’s activity is conducting research and development work, which comprises the breeding of all species of farm animals, production of safe food under animal and environmentally friendly conditions as well as the use of farm animals for biomedical purposes.
The Institute’s research programme is realized in ten scientific departments, which conduct research, research & development, implementation, dissemination works and trainings. The range of the activity of these departments was considered strategic for the changing needs of animal production:

Pig breeding
Poultry breeding
Sheep and goat breeding
Small livestock breeding
Horse breeding
Nutrition physiology
Production systems and environment
Animal molecular biology
Biotechnology of reproduction and cryopreservation
The Institute realizes the Multiannual Programme under name “Protection and management of national genetic resources of farm animals in conditions of sustainable utilization for years 2016-2020”, entrusted to it by the Council of Ministers, which is a natural continuation and the development of works conducted since 2006. The aim of the programme, involving the activities which concern functioning of animal production and breeding, able to compete on the European market and based on the state-of-the-art achievements of Polish and global science in the field of animal breeding and production, is to ensure biological progress of breeding farm animals while preserving rich biodiversity of animals with regard to biotechnological, technological and environmental determinants of production.
Since 23rd November 2006, the National Research Institute of Animal Production has possessed the national status for the achievements which are the result of scientific, dissemination and implementation activities undertaken by its employees. Moreover, it is entitled to confer a degree of Ph.D. and habilitated doctor of agricultural sciences in zootechnics discipline and Ph.D. of agricultural sciences in biotechnology discipline.
The National Research Institute of Animal Production cooperates with a lot of scientific centres from many countries among others from the Republic of South Africa, the Dominican Republic, Germany, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Lithuania.
Experimental Stations which function in the organizational structure of the Institute are located on the territory of the whole country. In majority, they operate as commercial law companies and fulfil a key role in conducted scientific works.
