Description:

The general mission of the InfoSol Service Unit is to build and manage a national information system on soils, in relation to their spatial distribution, their properties and the evolution of their qualities. For more than 15 years, information on French soils has been collected according to harmonized protocols and formats in the frame of the French Soils Scientific Interest Group (Gis Sol), created in 2001 in response to a need to inventory and monitor French Soils. To this end, InfoSol coordinates regional partners according to standardized methodologies and provides a national information system to build up data and make them available to the scientific community and public authorities. It manages the Conservatoire des Sols which stores an archive of French soils that can subsequently be used for a posteriori analyses of changes over time or for re-examination using new techniques. Finally, in order to support international, EU, national and regional policies needing soil data (e.g. agricultural, environmental, climate and health policies) the unit developed (geo)statistical methods to analyze, model and spatialize soil data.

InfoSol is now recognized and identified as leader in pedology, soil survey and monitoring, environmental information systems, data management, interoperability and treatment (including spatio-temporal treatments). It provides expertise to help end-users to take soil data into account in their activities.
