The L3S is a joint institution of the Leibniz Universität Hannover and the Technische Universität Braunschweig with about 150 scientists from different disciplines at several universities and a Leibniz Institute (the TIB), focusing on research in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. The total budget in 2018 amounted to about €8,5M, with more than 2⁄3 of the budget being third party funding from projects funded by the European Commission, German Research Foundation (DFG), German federal state governments or governmental institutions as well as from industry. Over the past 4 years, third party funding totaled over €25M. The L3S bundles the necessary core competences in the fields of computer science and related disciplines in order to develop intelligent, reliable and responsible systems for digital transformation, with a focus on transferring its knowledge and technology to industry and society. L3S researchers explore the implications of digital transformation to derive lessons learned, policy recommendations, and innovation strategies for the economy, politics, and society. Together with its partners, L3S facilitates the digital transformation through research, development and consulting.
