Vaartoe, the centre for Sami research at Umeå university, is organized as a research unit, aiming at supporting Sami research initiatives within all faculty areas, with a specific emphasis put on multidisciplinary efforts within the research areas (1) health and living conditions, (2) culture and history, (3) land and water, and (4) language and education. The research crew of Vaartoe consists of approximately 10 employees and 35 affiliated researchers. At present, Vaartoe do not give any courses. Instead, Sami cultural and language studies are offered through the Institution of Language studies, at Sámi dutkan, the department of Sami studies at Umeå university. The collaboration between Vaartoe and Sámi dutkan has a long history of fruitful partnership. Vaartoe also has a history of collaborating with researchers at the national Swedish agricultural university (SLU), which at present, are responsible for agricultural research related to reindeer herding in Sweden.
