Description:

The Institute of Data Science (IDS) at Maastricht University is an interfaculty program for collaborative innovation involving Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The research focus of the Institute of Data Science, founded by Distinguished Professor Michel Dumontier, is to accelerate scientific discovery, improve clinical care and well-being, and to strengthen communities. The Institute pursues these goals by fostering a collaborative environment for inter- and multidisciplinary research and training founded on accurate, reproducible, multi-scale, distributed, and efficient computation. IDS has a growing research programme in agrifood from a systems perspective.

Recent or ongoing projects:
1. The H2020-RUR-2019-1 project, European Repository for Practical Knowledge in Agriculture (EUREKA) (2020-21) brings together 21 multi-actors (MA) from 16 member states and 48 supporting organizations, to co-create a stronger and reinforced EU wide agricultural knowledge base by developing an open source e-platform, called the FarmBook. IDS provides expertise in the FAIR principles.
2. The H2020-SFS-2019-2 project DiTECT (2020-23). The DiTECT project (DIgital TEChnologies as an enabler for a conTinuous transformation of food safety management systems) focuses on the identification, control and mitigation of risks associated with current agro-food practices, in order to enhance food safety from primary production across to entire food chain; by focusing on a pre-defined set of food and food commodities, viz. corn (both as farm feed and raw material), cattle (including meat products and milk), poultry (including products) and fish. IDS will contribute mainly to the data management aspects of the project, particularly contributing expertise in data science, data standards, the FAIR principles and machine learning.
3. AgTech7 (2020-23); IDS is a partner in AgTech7, an Erasmus Plus project dedicated to advance inter-disciplinary knowledge for future agri-tech disruptive applications on a pan-European scale, through multi-actor mobilisation inclusive of the entire farm-to-fork food-chain spectrum. IDS will provide training on blockchains, data science, and the FAIR data principles for agritech entrepreneurs.
4. The ELIXIR Data Platform Implementation Study (2018-2019) put in place a software infrastructure and set of metrics to assess the FAIRness of digital resources in the ELIXIR community. ELIXIR is at the forefront of building a strong, connected community to lead the world for the discovery, accessibility, interoperability, and reuse of data and software, and this study put the FAIR principles into practice for ELIXIR Core Data Resources.
